A new home

Welcome to the new home of A lonestar in California. I’m moving here from my old site on MLBlogs, because I’ve been having problems accessing and using the new MLBlogs “movable type” format, and I’ve had enough already.

For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Jon, and I’m a diehard Texas Rangers fan living in Southern California. Here I will post my rants, opinions, and observations on the 2008 Texas Rangers squad, as they meander their way through the schedule.

A few things you should know about me:

- I think Gerald Laird sucks. Jarrod Saltalamacchia is the future of the Rangers at catcher, and he should be playing there right now, not the 28 year-old guy with a 616 career OPS against right-handed pitching.

- Favorite players are Josh Hamilton, Jarrod Saltalamacchia, and Hank Blalock, in that order.

- I think Ron Washington may be the worst manager in the history of the ballclub.

 Non baseball related stuff:

I listen to country music, with a little rock mixed in… favorite move is “Independence Day” with Will Smith… I think Miranda Lambert is the hottest woman alive (and the best female singer in country music) - period.

Tomorrow, or perhaps later tonight, I’ll make my first real post, and we can get into the swing of the Texas Rangers baseball season. I’ll also be building up the new site here, and adding more cool links and stuff as I go along, so keep an eye out for that.

In the meantime, I’m off to catch the Rangers vs. the Seattle Mariners game tonight. It’s our own Vicente Padilla taking on young Felix Hernandez… go Rangers!

Jon -

I feel your pain re: MLB Blogs – Mark Newman is the guy in charge of the blogs and when I’m in a better frame of mind I’m sending him nice long e-mail detailing my frustrations.

Like the new blog and it’s linked to mine.

I totally agree: Ron Washington is not the manager this team needs – I’m thinking the guy this team needs is standing over by the 3rd Base (Matt Wallbeck) – he’s young and has a good history of working with younger players (see his minor league track record as a manager) the quicker they get that situation resolved the better it will be.

As I wrote on Micah’s blog – good infield defenses should be in sync like the inner workings of a clock – I don’t get that feeling from our IF defense – and right now it’s killing us – don’t know if it’s because they’ve been fighting the flu, or trying to do too much – but if Ron Washington is a such a defensive genius – he need to figure out what’s going on with those guys – and not just sit back and let them continue to play this way.

As for last nights game: Roy Hobbs now playing CF for the Texas Ranger – that’s all you need to know.

WordPress, good choice.

EMC – thanks for the link, much appreciated as always.

I’m on the Matt Walbeck bandwagon as well – my prediction is he’s manager sooner rather than later. Wash’s philosophy of trying to compete with marginal players conflicts with JD’s 3-5 year plan in just about every way – it’s in the best interests of the team that Wash either gets a clue and gets on board, or gets fired.

Sprite – Thanks. WordPress is still complicated, and not quite as flexible as I’d expected, but it’s better than the current state of things at MLBlogs, and I liked the asthetics better than Blogspot, so here we are.

We’ll see how things work out with this – if MLBlogs makes themselves functional again, I might consider moving back over there because I certainly enjoyed being part of the MLBlogs community, but for now, this is home. In any case, the old site is still there, so there’s plenty of time to see how things work out.

Just put your blog up on the sidebar, BTW – I’ve still got some work to do getting all the links I want up here, but I’m getting there.
